Landing in Petén

Landing in Petén by Rudy Girón

This is the view one gets as the airplane approaches the runway in Santa Elena, Petén. This is a sort of follow-up post to Luna’s Bird’s Eye View of Xela, except this is taken from metal bird. 😉

Have you visited Petén? If so, what did you visit and for how long were you in Petén.

A river trip to Aquateca and a jeep trail into Nakun were the highlights of my last trip to Peten. Both ruins told a story of how the smaller towns were organized. Aquateca’s location on a limestone outcrop was dramatic, the burn marks on its buildings told of a sad end. Nakun was interesting in that its building style was a mix of Tikal and Calakmul.
