Indignant Movement in Guatemala

Friday, June 1st, 2012

I”ve been meaning to share with you this picture regarding demonstrations in Guatemala. In this case it was related to Movimiento 15-M,  In this small demonstration people protested against abuse of natural resources, extreme capitalism, the financial market system, among others.

In Guatemala demostrations are very common. There are of course big demonstrations. There’s the one the teachers organize to demand an increase in the education budget and it occurrs every year, it last long enough to end  it with a national roundtable dialogue. There’s also the labor unions and indigenous movement protests regarding land claims, protests over mining and hydroelectric power companies.  Some of the organized movements in Guatemala that makes these demonstrations so big are: Plataforma Agraria (32 organizations involved), Convergencia Indígena, CUC, etc.

How effective do you think public demonstrations are?
