Holy Monday Around Lake Atitlán: Washing Maximon’s Clothes

Monday, March 30th, 2015

Holy Monday - Washing Maximon's clothes © Meghan Eckman

This year, Maximón is housed at San Antonio cofradía. Each year during Holy Week, Maximón is dismembered, his clothes are washed, a new mask is carved, and he is reassembled again. The traditionalist Maya interpret the time of Christ’s death as a time when Maximón is reborn.

On the Monday of Holy Week each year, known as Holy Monday, the cofradía that houses Maximón collects the clothes that Maximón has worn throughout the year. They march in procession, carrying washing stones and Maximon’s clothes to Lake Atitlan, where his clothes are ritually washed, thus cleansing the clothes of the sins confessed to Maximón throughout the year. It is interesting to note that while women typically do the washing in Guatemala, on this day – it is only men who are allowed to wash Maximon’s clothes.

The Guatemalan Musician Germán Giordano

Germán Giordano by Hugo Muralles

Germán Giordano will be, without a doubt, one of the most charismatic and talented musicians we’ll see on stage for a long time in the guatemalan music scene. He has over forty years making music.

His remarkable musical career was celebrated with a magnificent concert in which he played -with several invited musicians- some of the most iconic and important pieces of jazz of all time. And so The International Jazz Festival was inaugurated a few days ago.  Don’t miss the upcoming updates.

Let’s talk about photojournalism in Guatemala

Let's talk about photojournalism in Guatemala by Hugo Muralles

There’s a recent boom in digital media in Guatemala, journalism is taking the big leap to Internet or at least that’s what one could hope: There are a few decent sources that are not that focused on getting page views in order to sell big numbers to advertisers, one of them, Plaza Pública is celebrating four years of work.  In the main picture, Luis Soto, Deccio Serrano, Jesús Alfonso and Marvin Del Cid.

As a terrible side note: The photographer and journalist Luis Soto was robbed the same day this talk took place, with tears in his eyes he told this awful experience; lost all of his equipment, he said.
This bad experience among others, were shared in this brief talk meant to discuss the pros and cons about their work in Guatemala.  Overall, they all agreed in the fact that they are not risking their lives for a front page picture, but they also admit, the adrenaline and passion sometimes makes it hard to draw the line.

I find people was really interested in this subject, which is always good for everyone.  They also mentioned there’s a need for support from the heads in the traditional media to recognize the value of their work, and everything that goes with the profession, from fair salaries to psychological assistance.

One of my favorite photographers in Guatemala, Sandra Sebastian was in the audience, supposedly she was invited to be part of the speakers but she refused.  I’ll try to reach her in the future.

By the way, sad and terrible news for this profession and the freedom of speech, a few days ago. (Spanish)
