Nothing like home by Eddie Deleon

In Guatemala nothing beats the taste of a home cooked meal. My family lives in the small town of San Lucas Tolimán, in Lake Atitlán. After a quick visit to the Guatemala City, my travels always take me home to San Lucas Tolimán and to the old kitchens of my grandmother and aunt. Not matter what time of the day it is, you can always find tortillas and fresh pots of coffee and black beans. The perfect compliment to such a traditional plate is the tomato and onion sauce kown as chirmol, which you can spread over the beans and eggs. My aunt prepares her chirmol by roasting the tomatoes in a comal over a wood fire. In San Lucas Tolimán, most home still use these old-fahioned stoves known as poyos. You can catch up on family news while waiting for the tomatoes to be ready. The result is an amazing gastronomical experience that feeds your tummy and soul.
