Guatemala’s Shanty Towns

SUrprisingly, We have seen improvements on the infrastructure of our shanty towns.

When I left Guatemala almost two dacades ago, this same shanty town was littered with tinny ‘houses’ built out off zinc panels, plastic bags held in place by small stones, and other leftover construction materials. There was no electricity, no drinking water system; access was through some very narrow dirt-tracks, etc.
Now days they have decent public services, access paths have been improved, people have been able to build some nice houses, some of them are the envy of the common working classer*.
And they have the best location! Downtown Guatemala City is about 10 minute walk from this ‘shanty town’. A house with such a location would cost you some serious money here in Guatemala.
