Guatemalan Food: Doña Mela

Doña Mela, one of Downtown Guatemala City’s most iconic food joints.
Located at Mercado Central, very easy to find and everyone knows it.
Her food place has been featured in news articles and on at least one music video by one of Guatemala most prominent music bands.

Chicharron con Pelos, by Miseria Cumbia Band:

Her food is incredibly tasty and there is a rich variety to choose from. I tried several of her dishes. I really liked their “tiras de panza” cow’s stomach strips stew, they served them as tacos and they are great. Their revolcado is realy good too; a stew of several “discarded” meats.
Food here is somewhat inexpensive too. Most dishes go for Q10 ($1.25) and Q15 ($1.90) those that contained meats. For a hungry person two dishes are enough plus a beer is Q10.

The only thing I think is not optimum, is the food’s temperature. Most of the featured dishes have to be served hot or at least warm, but what I tried was on the cold side. This food stand is small and narrow and food is too much to be prepared on location, so I presume it is prepared somewhere else and taken there. They don’t have heated tables or countertop warmers, so the food gets cold rapidly so make sure you arrived early.

Mi like. Excelent photo of the Doña Mela and the watchful eye of the Abuela photo in the background. How many of the recipes are hers ?

      Hello NYChapin.
I was there during a busy time so I did not have much of a chance to talk to her. Next time I’ll ask.
