Ancient Mayan City of Q’umarkaj

The City was the capital of the K’iche’ people and one of the most powerful states in Guatemala upon the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors.

In 1524, conquistadors camped on the outskirts of the city and invited the Mayan kings to joined them. Kings Oxib’Keh and Beleheb’tzy were captured and kept as prisoner. After some atempts to rescue the kings by K’iche’ warriors; the kings were burnt alive by the conquistadors and their city was set ablaze.
