The Elusive Quetzal Bird

Pharomachrus moccino, one of the most beautiful birds in the Americas

and somewhat rare it is rather difficult to spot it.
Its habitat has been reduced to some patches of cloud forest on Guatemala’s Sierra de las Minas and a small “bantustan” on the department of Baja Verapaz at the Biopoto del Quetzal and surroundings. This last being its breeding and nesting site for excellence.
One of the best places to catch a glimpse of the bird is at Ranchitos del Quetzal, a small and basic hotel next to the Biotopo. This hotel is located on a natural corridor the bird uses for his feeding habits.

Have you seen it?
