Guatemala’s Thorn Forest

Saturday, March 5th, 2016

Guatemala’s thorn forest covers a small patch of land about 900 square kilometers. Situaded to the East of the country, at about 400 meters above sea level, it is flanked by mountain ranges to the North and South, effectively blocking the Pacific and Atlantic ocean’s humidity and winds; making it a very hot and dry terrain.
The Thorn Forest is home to the Heloderma lizard, a subspecies of the Gila Monster, endemic only to this region and not found anywhere else.
