Cerrito del Carmen

IMG_0069
Cerrito del Carmen is a small hill on the outskirts of the Historical Center of Guatemala City.
The site holds a bad reputation as it used to be frequented by gangs, streets criminals, pickpockets, drug users and prostitutes.

A few years ago, the local municipality embarked on a project to rescue and embellish the site: it has been fenced up and restored, there are constant national police patrols and municipal police has a permanent presence on the site and now days crime is unheard of.
In my opinion, Cerrito del Carmen is the best place on Zona 1 to see the sunset and other amazing views.
Leave the paranoia and visit Cerrito del Carmen, you won´t be disappointed.

My family’s home is close to el Cerrito. It was one of my favorite spots as a kid. I was enthralled by its legends and ghosts — la siguanaba, Pie de Lana. It is regrettable and a bit ridiculous that the Cerrito and the area around it are not part of the Centro Historico. Condominiums are going up everywhere around the area and completely changing the character of the barrios. The Centro Historico should extend to Matamoros in the north and to the Calle Marti to the east.

Nice shots Eli, el cerrito was my childhood playground. As a kid, I would run up to the big cross whenever a bus full of tourists would rumble up the cobblestone road. We would pose for pictures with the tourists for a few coins. I wonder how many homes in the States or Europe have a picture of me hanging from the wall ? ja ja ja
