Nicaraguan Food

Gallo Pinto, a staple of the Nicaraguan food is also available on the streets of the Historic Center of Guatemala City.

Gallo Pinto is a simple mix of small red kidney beans, mixed up with rise and served with fried plantains.

There is a large Nicaraguan community in Guatemala, a lot of them migrated over during the Contra´s conflict and decided to stay over, and to satisfy those cravings for home foods, a few Nicaraguan restaurants opened for business.
There are other Nicaraguan foods available, something very interesting: a lot of the products are unavailable in Guatemala, and these Nicaraguan restaurants have to get their supply from tourists from Nicaragua and contraband packages to get their beer, Nicaraguan fruits, cheese and other essentials to create those foods from their home country.
