A simple leisure day in Guatemala

Sunday, October 13th, 2013

A very interesting leisure day here in Guatemala.
Rode my bicycle to the province of Escuintla to checkout the crops on my farm.
Of course I forgot my personal pass (without it you have to pay) for the water park but I explained to the crew I had one and they were nice enough to let me in without asking much and I spent some time at the pool after working on my land.
It was rainy on my way back, I had to stop riding my bike and boarded a chicken bus.
It was raining so hard, at some point I could not see 4 feet infront of us, I’ve no idea how the bus driver managed to keep going.
Streets downtown Escuintla City were flooded!

Just another day here in Guatemala…..
Chicken bus? How should we call them?

Loved it!
I hopped on a bus today and it had some old Mexican movies being played on this 30″ TV. The sound system was of great quality too.

Daily Commute!
This is the Pedestrian Bridge Entrance to a Transmetro Station -the Guatemalan Mass Transit System-. Just a few more days of this and we all get a break here in Guatemala during Holy Week. And trust me; car commute is not any different! That’s why I rather ride my bicycle.

Public Transport: Ayudantes

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Ayudantes (assistants) who work with the drivers of the buses that now are being left into disuse in Guatemala City; they earn about $ 10.00 per day in the best case scenario.

Is a dangerous job, mostly about crime and don’t escape all sorts of speculation and to discrimination in a society like ours, which is small but very divided. Currently there is a general notion that most ayudantes belong to maras (criminal groups) not entirely true, but it’s inevitable that these groups have penetrated all areas and the transport system is one of them.

Women-only buses in Guatemala City

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Something is very wrong if the public transport system looks like the first picture at the bottom, right?

Since last week Transurbano, a new transport system that is currently being implemented in the city has new buses exclusively for the use of women.  They are being enabled during rush hour, early in the mornings and late afternoons.

Sexual harassment and the disadvantage of overloading the transport units are for women, the worst scenario. Abuses in the public transport are real, no doubt about that. And yet, we have people who deny it or that complains, believe it or not. The real problem still exists.

The degradation of society is before our eyes. The man is still incapable of respecting a women.

Do you know any other country in which public transportation is enabled for women only?

A dialogue with delays, but that chapter is closed 😉
