Estefani Brolo & What The Funk

Saturday, June 23rd, 2012

I started the day with a very simple task: Attend the music festival that local administration has organized in zona 1. The aim is to promote music that is being created in Guatemala City with live performances at several parks around what is known as el centro.

How cool is that?

Well, I had the chance to see a live performance by one of my favorite bands, but I’m going to talk about Estefani Brolo and the band that accompanies her: What The Funk.

Finally another charismatic performer! An enjoyable and well-executed mixture of R&B, Funk and Jazz.  It was great to see her live, she captures you  from the first moment she steps onto the stage.  I’ll be posting a video of the presentation in a few days.  Meanwhile, you can hear something in the video below:

The festival continues over the weekend, so expect more music in a few hours.

XXXI Festival de Marimba PaizQuality is guaranteed with an assemblage of the top ten marimbas from Guatemala who will be performing on September 25th with two shows at Cultural Center Miguel Ángel Asturias, the Festival de Marimba Paiz celebrates its thirty-first edition.

The musical direction is by Guillermo De León Ruiz with special guests, including Bob Porter and his Orchestra.

Porter who came in the 70’s to Guatemala worked with great musicians of that time, also traveled from mid-eighties with his orchestra to the United States where they were always recognized for their music, a few years ago they return to Sacramento JazzFest and earn a place in the top three orchestras. That fills him with satisfaction and smiles as he recalls the experience at the rehearsal.

He says that while some might argued that they didn’t have the same technical level, there was something special about the musicians who made them become part of the best bands at that time.
