Remnants of Rock Culture

Saturday, September 28th, 2013

Rock Culture is dying down here in Guatemala.
In fact, there is no single good Rock radio station anymore, the last one they tell me changed its style more than three years ago; now they play pop music. But there still some loyal young people out here.
By chance I ended up at this autograph signing by Alan Boguslavsky, former guitar player of one of the most renown Latin America rock bands. The Dream of the Dead, by Alan Boguslavsky.

Street Art: Graffiti Mayan Woman
This is a Street Paint of a Mayan Woman. I found this one on a wall on Sexta Avenida (Sixth Avenue) of Zona 1.

I think that I haven’t talked about this awesome post-hardcore guatemalan band: Volver.   They have some of their songs for online download; an interesting fact: they toured the U.S just a few months ago. News you won’t read elsewhere because the underground musical movement in Guatemala, although is quite active, doesn’t receive that much attention from traditional media.

Trust me this time, one of the best instrumental/post rock creative bands in Guatemala right now: Xb’alanke.

No Need to Remember Colors

Los Últimos Adictos, one of the most popular rock bands in Guatemala several years ago.  The audience was excited to see them again yesterday.

A Concert Asking For Tolerance

Saturday, September 3rd, 2011

Local municipal administration of Guatemala City is characterized by preventing that places dedicated to promoting rock bands open their doors to the public. Artists argue that the mayor’s personal preference determines the decisions that affect the entire population. They criticize his taste for classical music and ignores that rock music is also culture.

So, several musicians gathered in Central Park a few hours ago to bring that message to people and ask for tolerance and fair treatment. The campaign (in Spanish) brings up the hidden desire of the Mayor Álvaro Arzú for leading a European city and they remind him that this is Guatemala and that his job is to solve real problems.

Please tell us how it works in your city. Do you find censorship to certain genres of music where you live?

Semana Musical: Los Mojarras

Saturday, June 18th, 2011

If this band plays live, prepare yourself to have some serious fun, otherwise I suggest to leave the place!

They aren’t the first band of instrumental rock in Guatemala, they are probably with surf music. Have been around for a few years now. They are already working in their second studio album, the new stuff is a little bit diffrent and you can get an idea here. You can visit their website to download the previous album and buy the new one.

In their shows, when some other bands are invited, they always gonna perform at the end of the night, so, keeping the tradition, with this band we finish the first week dedicated to music.

Don’t forget to let us know what you think!

Semana Musical: None At Last

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

I’ve been thinking that we should have a week dedicated to music. The first band is called None at Last, an experimental rock band that started in 2006, currently recording new material. On their website you can find some of their music for download. When they perform live there are always lots of energy and the sound is really good, the live shows definitely worth it.
